English Is Killing Me.

Both the subject and the language.

I have my Honors English exam tomorrow and for the past few hours I have been pouring over my notes and our Norton Anthology of American Literature trying to remember the difference between John Edwards and Edward Taylor, the virtues in Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography, the metaphors used by the Fireside poets and the themes of the works of Rowlandson, Bradstreet, Byrd, etc. The only recurring theme I've come up with so far is that of me not giving a shit.

In other English language news, I have started to speak in abbreviations. I have noticed that this has become quite popular among my peers as of late as if the majority of 15-25 year olds held some kind of secret meeting in which they decided that if it can't be abbreved, it shouldn't be said. Whatever its origin, I am finding that it has slowly crept into my life and presented itself as my newest bad habit. I try to catch myself, but it's as if when people around me say them, they fly out of their mouths and into my brain where they bop around my head for a bit until it's time for them to pop back out again. It's like some sort of fucked-up grammar pinball game. With my head.

In case you don't know what kind of abbreviations I'm talking about, here are some examples:

Whatevs = Whatever
Seri = Seriously
Awk = Awkward
Hilar = Hilarious
OMG = Oh my god
BTW = By the way

I've even started to say "Bee tee dub" for "by the way." It's getting serious now. I'm not sure how to break this habit, like if there is a patch I could wear or a gum I could chew or a group I could join like Abbreviators Anonymous. "Hi, I'm Ally and I'm an abbreviator." I could get a special support pal I could call whenever I felt like I was about to abbreviate. They'd be all, "Repeat after me, Ally: Seriously. Seriously." And I'd be like, "Seri....seri....ously." And they'd be all, "Yay, Ally! You did it!"

Okay, but in all seriousness, I need to stop because I'm totes annoying myself. And the last thing I need is to go into some interview or something and say "omg". Because that would seri be awk for both parties involved.

I know exactly how you're feeling. I pretty much do the same thing; it's like when I'm hanging around with nerds, I speak properly. But when I'm hanging around with people that say things like "awl" and "seri", I tend to use them, too.

But the real Alex doesn't use them too much (yet) except in text messages.

But sometimes abbreviations are my BFFAEAEAEAEAEAEAEAEAEAE...

I... I had a rather long and florid comment, bemoaning your use of abbreviations, but-- I can't. I'm sorry. This is just too much to handle.

I need some time.

If, however, you write an eloquent ode to Natalie, I might find in myself to forgive you.

(Haha, I come off as horribly arrogant, don't I?)

I
hate
you.

Look, I could say exactly what I wanted WITHOUT abbreviating anything. Imagine that.

And if you ever need someone to call because you are say 'bee tee dub' you know I'm here. I will save the English language one teenager at a time.

I love you ally vg. That is one of my favorite posts you've written. I love it. But, I haven't heard you do this yet. So, I hope that makes you feel better.

I get yelled at by Alex when using improper launguage
*rolls eyes*

I try to use proper english a lot more now, but it's so much easier to abbrv things.

Ha ha. Abbreviations were big at my school, too (and probs still are - sorry, couldn't resist, just an example!) But it was mostly SMS speak, like OMG or BTW; sometimes TTFN or TTYL. Some people used to say - really annoyingly - a-sap (instead of ASAP), like it would kill them to spell it out. Not too big on "seri" or "awk," which I've not really heard of before.

My brother finds it funny to use LOL; I don't.

Totes was one that was really irritating, but hard to avoid using.

Oh, and good luck for your exam! Which you've obviously already had by now. Oh well, hope it went well.

Hello! I'm baaaack! I totally think abbreviations are like a more uncalled for version of the already annoying Acronym.
